VASTU SHASTRA

Vastu Shastra is an Indian science dating back many thousands of years which is used to heal and improve people’s lives in relation to their living space or habitat. Vastu is the name given to the dynamic energy within living things, including building and structures.

Vastu Shastra is also a sister science of yoga and ayurveda and it promotes working with natural materials, respecting and honouring the qualities of each, recognising how positively people respond to the look and feel of materials like wood, stone, grasses and natural fabrics, and of living plants in the home environment.

Colour is important to promote health and happiness in home. The vastu scheme recognises the four traditional elements of earth, air, fire and water and each has its own corresponding colour: gold for earth, vivid blue for air, red for fire and aqua blue for water.

Vastu also identifies, and stresses the importance of, a fifth element, space, and dictates that the central area of a home and the centre of each room within it should be kept clear and open, free of any heavy objects that could impede the flow of energy. If the energy flow in the home gets hampered there can be unpleasant and unwanted events like marital discord, unhealthy children, financial losses and gradual unhappiness.

Unlike feng shui, vastu can be highly individualized. Occupant’s work, lifestyle, and personality will be considered before fine-tuning decisions about placement and remedies.

In order to work out the best design layout a Vastu Shastra practitioner uses a mandala and a compass.

The method of applying Vastu

The Vastu Purusha mandala is an indispensable part of vastu shastra and constitutes the mathematical and diagrammatic basis for generating design. It is the metaphysical plan of a building that incorporates the course of the heavenly bodies and supernatural forces. Purusha refers to energy, power, soul or cosmic man. Mandala is the generic name for any plan or chart which symbolically represents the cosmos.
